A Teacher’s Guide to YouTube

YouTube can be a powerful education tool. Access curriculum-aligned video resources, simple how-to guides, and FAQs built to support educators who choose to use YouTube videos in their lessons.

Learn how to use purpose-built YouTube tools for teachers

Prioritize student focus during live instruction

Show videos through YouTube’s Player for Education

The recommended way to show YouTube videos to your class is through YouTube’s Player for Education; an embedded video player built directly into the most widely used Edtech tools

Provide a distraction-free viewing experience

YouTube’s Player for Education delivers a simplified viewing experience that also provides additional privacy safeguards for students. As part of this experience, the player doesn’t show ads or recommendations, and has no links back to YouTube.

Embed videos in Google Slides

YouTube’s Player for Education is built directly into Google Slides, so you can seamlessly search for the exact video you need, adjust the start and end times, preview the video, and prepare a distraction-free learning experience for your students.

Maintain student focus on assignments

Add videos to assignments with YouTube’s Player for Education

When creating student assignments with YouTube videos, it is recommended that you embed videos to play though YouTube’s Player for Education.

Limit student attention to pre-selected content

When your students watch videos embedded with YouTube’s Player for Education, the simplified viewing experience ensures they see only the assigned educational video without any ads or recommendations.

Easily found on the most widely used Edtech tools

YouTube’s Player for Education is built into some of the most commonly used Edtech tools. If your school uses these tools and YouTube is enabled for teachers, it is recommended that you embed YouTube videos to play with YouTube’s Player for Education for student assignments. This will ensure students are directed to a focused viewing experience of your assigned content only.

Foster independent learning with guardrails

Understand controls on YouTube student accounts

If YouTube is permitted for students at your school and students access YouTube through their Google Workspace for Education account, they will be browsing YouTube on a student account. On student accounts, certain YouTube features are disabled and your school’s tech administrator can apply content settings designated by age groups.

Ensure students see age-appropriate content

Whether doing research for a project or learning about a complex topic in depth, students can navigate YouTube’s vast library of educational resources within the content settings chosen by your school’s tech administrator.

Keep students on task with limited feature access

School administrator-managed YouTube accounts for under-18 students maintain a protected learning environment by disabling certain features. Students won’t be able to see comments posted by others or post comments themselves, and they won’t have access to live chat. Creating and publishing videos, hosting and watching live streams, purchases, and standalone apps like YouTube Music, Studio, TV, and VR are all disabled.

Ken Burns comes to your classroom via YouTube

Legendary documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, in collaboration with PBS LearningMedia, will be bringing classroom content to the official Ken Burns YouTube Channel. The digital courses from “Ken Burns in the Classroom” combine professionally edited film segments with interactive classroom materials to make history engaging, immersive, and accessible for modern learning environments.

“I’ve always thought that our shared history should be accessible to everyone, hence my long-term partnership with PBS for all of our work and with PBS LearningMedia to ensure that teachers and students have access to our films and educational materials.” Ken Burns said. “Bringing these educational materials to YouTube is a natural extension of how we’ve tried to engage educators and students directly, empowering students to ask tough questions, examine different perspectives, and see themselves in the ongoing American story.”

The first three courses available on YouTube today are focused on The American Revolution. The six-part, 12-hour documentary series directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion, won their independence, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe.

Have Questions? We’ve got answers.

What is YouTube’s Player for Education?

YouTube’s Player for Education is the recommended solution for teachers who want to include YouTube videos in their lesson plans. It’s an embedded video player that delivers a simplified, distraction-free viewing experience. Even if YouTube is disabled for students or youtube.com is blocked on the school network, teachers can embed videos to play with YouTube’s Player for Education. If YouTube is disabled/blocked for students, and teachers exclusively embed videos to play with YouTube’s Player for Education, students will only see YouTube videos that have been preselected by their teachers.

Consult your school’s tech administrator to confirm if the Edtech tools at your school integrate with YouTube’s Player for Education and whether YouTube is enabled for teachers.

How can I remove ads, other features and links on YouTube videos?

To ensure a fully distraction-free YouTube viewing experience, embed YouTube videos with YouTube’s Player for Education - the default embed player found on some of the most popular Edtech tools

Which Edtech tools integrate with YouTube’s Player for Education?

Google Workspace for Education (including Google Classroom), Canvas, Seesaw, Kahoot!, Edpuzzle, Pear Deck, Newsela, Wayground, Screencastify, Teachmint, WeVideo, and Classhook currently integrate with YouTube’s Player for Education.

Note: This list may change over time. Consult your school’s tech administrator to confirm if the Edtech tools at your school integrate with YouTube’s Player for Education.

What does a student see when a video is assigned to them by their teacher via Player for Education?

Students only see the YouTube video that was preselected by their teacher. The viewing experience is simplified and distraction-free, limiting student attention to the assigned content.

How can I find grade appropriate educational content on YouTube to support my lesson planning and instruction?

We created a Standards-Aligned Content Library for teachers in the United States. This features a growing collection of hundreds of high-quality educational videos mapped to state and national standards. You can use provided filter options (Subject, Grade, Topic) to find the right videos for your needs.
We also feature Engaging & High Quality Educational Content on this website, which is a library of curated channels and videos supporting K-12 learning across a variety of subjects.

Alternatively, use these best practices when searching for content:

  1. Search YouTube for well-known educational partners like Amoeba Sisters, Khan Academy, CrashCourse, Math with Mr. J., Black Girls Code, TED-Ed, and Ken Burns.
  2. Look for channels that have a “Courses” tab. Creators that use YouTube’s Courses feature created structured playlists with defined learning objectives, quizzes, progress bars, and downloadable attachments such as lesson plans and worksheets.

What is the experience for a student who browses youtube.com on a YouTube student account?

When students browse youtube.com while logged into their Google Workspace for Education account, they are able to search YouTube’s library of content and watch videos but there are safety defaults applied to their viewing experience. Comments, live chat, live streams, video publishing, purchases, and standalone apps (YouTube Music, Studio, TV, VR) are all disabled. Additionally, students can only view a limited set of videos based on the content settings chosen by their school’s tech administrator.

Why are some YouTube videos blocked for me?

If some YouTube videos are blocked when you browse youtube.com, this means your school’s tech administrator has enforced content restrictions on your school network or K-12 Google Workspace for Education account and/or you may be trying to access Mature Age (MA) content.

Note: All viewers under the age of 18 cannot see or access MA content on YouTube.

How can I show a YouTube video that has been blocked?

If you want to disable content restrictions on youtube.com for a specific video, and your school provides Google Workspace for Education accounts for teachers, you need to first check if your administrator has given teachers permission to unrestrict individual videos. If you do have the right to approve videos, you’ll see a message at the bottom of a blocked video stating, “Video not approved for ytedu-learning,” and next to that will be an “Approve” button. Once you click “Approve”, that video will be “allow listed”.

Note: When you “allow list” a video, it becomes available to all K-12 Google Workspace for Education users that have YouTube enabled.

How can I identify AI-generated content on YouTube videos?

Viewers value transparency when it comes to generative-AI content. To keep viewers informed, YouTube will show labels to AI-generated or AI-altered content. Visually photorealistic and AI-generated or meaningfully AI-altered content receives a visible label on or below the video player, while other AI content is labeled in the description. Click here to learn more about how YouTube is improving AI labels for viewers and creators.

How should I use the YouTube Standards-aligned Library vs Learning Goals available in Google Classroom or other edtech tools that have similar features?

While both tools support standards-based education, they serve different phases of your instructional workflow - specifically, the difference between delivering instruction and measuring it. The Standards-aligned Library of YouTube videos can be your go-to resource for lesson planning and direct instruction, offering a curated collection of high-quality videos mapped to core learning objectives across Science, ELA, Math, and Life Skills to help you introduce or reinforce concepts. Learning Goals in Google Classroom (and similar tagging features in other tools) are designed for assessment, grading, and progress tracking by allowing you to attach official educational standards directly to assignments and rubrics. Ultimately, these systems work hand-in-hand: you can use the YouTube library to find the best content to teach a specific objective, and use Google Classroom's Learning Goals to assess and track your students' mastery of it.

What is “YouTube for Education"?

YouTube for Education is a dedicated program and branding wrapper that centralizes YouTube’s educational resources, tools, content curation, partnerships, and training initiatives for educators and administrators. This includes offerings like YouTube’s Player for Education, an embedded player that lets schools stream YouTube content inside approved EdTech tools with enhanced privacy controls and without commercial interruptions.

YouTube for Education represents YouTube (youtube.com), which operates as a distinct platform with separate service terms. Unlike Google Workspace for Education core services (such as Google Classroom or Google Docs), YouTube is designated as an Additional Service rather than a Core Service for Workspace for Education accounts. This distinction helps school leaders and teachers clearly understand how data privacy governance and parental consent requirements apply when bringing YouTube resources into the classroom. Learn more about the Service categories available to Google Workspace for Education Users.
